SAMBHAR SALT PONDS

Rajasthan India | 2008

This documentary focused on the relationship between industrialization and patterns of labor involvement in salt evaporation facilities in India. While industrial scale salt producing facilities elsewhere in the world have come to rely on machine based harvesting which reduces human labor, salt harvesting facilities in India such as at the Sambhar Lake have intentionally preserved labor-intensive, hand-crafted methods of salt harvesting. Over 100,000 people in India are directly employed in the salt industry.
