BOSTON UNDERSTORIES

Seoul Architecture and Urbanism Biennale | Seoul, South Korea | 2019

From the website: The Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism’s City Exhibition invited architects and designers from more than 80 cities around the world to look deeper into their most important topics and issues based on the main theme of the biennale, “Collective City.”

Landing Studio’s contribution, Boston Understories, looks at spaces under roadway viaducts through the lens of regulatory signs. Standard signs like 'no trespassing' limit public access and fail to reflect the potential of these spaces. In Boston, market forces are pushing development into infrastructural margins. Spaces that were once out-of-sight and out-of-mind are now part of the city. Boston Understories reflects on this phenomena through a signage system that imagines new forms of access and programming in these spaces where ecological systems converge with mobility networks, and public works intermingle with public recreation.
